What is Baptism at the River? That’s a fantastic question! It's an entirely new initiative for the Shelbyville Middle School FCA.
First, why is the SMS FCA baptizing students? When a student responds to a gospel presentation at one of our Huddles, it sets off a process that includes several important steps. We encourage them to join our New Believers Bible Study, a four-week morning Bible study held before school. After completing this study, we will suggest that they consider baptism. If they do not have a home church, we will conduct the baptism through the SMS FCA Ministry. For those with a home church, we encourage them to discuss baptism with their pastors.
How did we get here? At the beginning of the 2024-25 school year, a student approached me (Warren) and said, "Warren, I want you to baptize me." Before I could respond, she added, "In a river!" That’s how the SMS FCA Baptism at the River came to be. We currently have five students joining us on the 25th to be baptized.
Baptism is a symbol of Christ's burial and resurrection. Our entrance into the water during baptism identifies us with Christ's death on the cross, His burial in the tomb, and His resurrection from the dead. A brand-new life: It symbolizes your new life as a Christian.
Baptism is good news—the good news of forgiveness, cleansing, justification, sanctification, and glorification. For individuals, as for the world, baptism is a sign, but it’s more than a sign. That “more” is often captured by the term “seal.”
A seal is a mark of ownership and identity. None of us is autonomous. As our very names attest, we all belong to someone. A seal tells us who we are by telling us to whom we belong.
If your child wants to be baptized with other FCA Students, please sign up HERE. They will need to attend the Baptism Class, which will be held before school in room 201 on Tuesday, August 20th from 6:45 AM to 8:10 AM.
Please be at the church by 10:30 AM. Please instruct your family and friend to arrive by 10:45 or sooner to get a front roll seat.
You should bring the following:
"At every baptism, God himself preaches the good news of his Son. Every baptized person is a fresh announcement of God’s promise, commissioned to proclaim the good news." —Peter J. Leithart.
You must share this major milestone of your life with the people that love, support, and pray for you. That could be aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. But it is also your crew, your teammates, and your friends! Make sure you invite all the people who mean something to you.
How can you invite them? Send them a text/snap/IM/DM of this link along with, "Hey, I'm getting baptized this Sunday, and it would mean so much to me if you were there with me."
If you have any questions, please contact me at warren@smsfca.org or you may call or text me at 317-401-1044.
